Derrick Rose breaks down at adidas sneaker launch

At his adidas D3 sneaker launch, Derrick Rose broke down in front of cameras, showing the human side rarely seen of superstar athletes. It’s been a trying time for Rose as he tries to make his way back to the NBA after knee surgery during the first round of this year’s NBA Playoffs. In fact, adidas and D-Rose are in the midst of “The Return” episodes (see Hope, Belief) that chronicle his rehab to get back on the court. He’s even received advice from fellow superstar and Chicago native, Dwyane Wade.

Watch the video below and begin to understand how deep Rose is as a person, not just a player:

From CBS Sports’ Eye on Basketball:

“It’s truly a blessing,” Rose said finally. “With all this stuff going on in this city, a kid from Englewood got something positive going on. That makes me feel so good, man.”

Rose, a Chicago native, has spoken out about the teachers’ strike in his hometown. His city has also seen a rash of violent crime this year.

Choking back tears, Rose continued.

“This shoe is great, this is great, but I can’t explain this. I can’t. Went through so much, to have true fans, that means a lot to me. And I know it means a lot to my family. We aren’t supposed to be here, at all. But God made the way. This is truly unreal. I’m just happy that I have true fans out there.”

After this display of humanity, you have to think that Rose will have even more fans, supporting him and helping him rise up.
