31 Days of Halloween Episodes: Korn’s Groovy Pirate Ghost Mystery (South Park)

Here at Pop Culture Spin we refuse to accept that Halloween is only one day. We’re going to be celebrating Halloween all month, by highlighting one of our favorite Halloween episodes every day. Today’s we’re looking at the South Park episode “Korn’s Groovy Pirate Ghost Mystery.”

Basic Info

Directed by: Trey Parker

Written by: Trey Parker

Episode Number: Season 3, Episode 10

Where to Watch It: Hulu

Why It’s Great

As you might’ve guessed from the title, this is a parody of old cartoons like Scooby-Doo featuring Korn. The band rolls into town in their van and stumbles on some fake ghost pirates. Watching Korn be excessively tame and polite while going through the tropes of Scooby-Doo is a delight. They also reference other old cartoons. Korn has an alien bird thing follows them around and in a great homage to the Wonder Twins, they activate their Korn powers– which give them the completely useless ability to turn into the form of corn.

Why It’s Full of Halloween Spirit

This is full of classic childhood Halloween moments, like a haunted house and a costume contest. Kenny manages to make an amazing replica ED-209 robot costume, but his friends are unimpressed. In a reference to their previous Halloween episode, Wendy ends up winning the costume contest with a Chewbacca costume.

Of course, since it’s South Park, there’s also over-the-top stuff like them deciding to dig up Kyle’s grandma’s body for the sake of a prank against the older kids. In a great visual gag, the graveyard has tombstones that say “Kenny 1999” and “Kenny 2000.”

Plus, throughout the episode Cartman won’t stop talking about how Christmas is only two months away. Now that is the true Halloween spirit.
