Alex Garland wrote and directed this film, and he is quite a talent, at least in the writing department. Garland has penned such scripts as 28 Days Later, Sunshine, and Dredd. It definitely looks like a breath of fresh air in the Sci-Fi genre, even though the A.I. plot has been done before. This film looks disturbing and intelligent, with a very intriguing plot that will question our passion for technology and the extent of the human condition. Did I mention it’s not a sequel or a remake?

Joining Oscar Isaac is Domhnall Gleeson, who plays the young programmer Caleb, and Alicia Vikander, who plays Ava the female A.I. Obviously, the title derives from the Latin phrase “Deus Ex-Machina,” which means “God from the Machine.” The term is used in plays and cinema to describe a celestial event or being that saves a seemingly hopeless situation. That doesn’t seem to be the case in this film though, or at least I hope it won’t be.

Ex Machina has just shot up to the top of my most anticipated films of 2015 list with a bullet.

Oscar Isaac has made some great film project choices, as he’s recently starred in A Most Violent Year, and Inside Llewlyn Davis; he’ll also be starring in Star Wars: the Force Awakens.
