Today’s we’re looking at the Chuck episode “Chuck Versus the Aisle of Terror.”

Basic Info

Directed by: John Scott

Written by: Craig DiGregorio, Rafe Judkins, Lauren LeFranc

Episode Number: Season 4, Episode 6

Where to Watch It: Netflix

Why It’s Great

This is an emotional and suspenseful episode where Chuck’s mother Mary Bartowski (guest star Linda Hamilton) returns to his life. She abandoned him when he was nine to become a spy. Chuck and the other characters believe she might be a bad guy, but she claims she’s undercover and working for the FBI.

Chuck wants to trust her, but Sarah and Casey are less naive and look into the truth, even knowing it might be disappointing. Making the emotional stakes even higher, Chuck’s sister Ellie is pregnant. Chuck hopes that knowing she’s going to be a grandmother will be enough to make Mary want to come back into her children’s lives for real. There are lots of twists and turns and at one point Chuck’s mom even shoots him. It’s a roller coaster!

Why It’s Full of Halloween Spirit

The true Halloween spirit comes in the subplot. Morgan tasks Lester and Jeff with decorating the store for Halloween. They decide to make it “truly scary,” which results in a bizarre aisle of terror that shows normal images that only the most screwed up minds will find terrifying.

This folds into the main plot when Chuck lures a bad guy into the aisle of terror, causing him to beg for mercy because of the seemingly harmless images.

Costume Count

There aren’t really any costumes in this episode.
