Tonight we’re talking about “Abed’s Uncontrollable Christmas” from Community. What Christmas episode tropes did this episode use? Let’s take a look.

Saving Christmas

This episode starts with Abed announcing that everyone is stop-motion animated. He’s excited and takes it as a sign that this will be the best Christmas ever, but the rest of the group worries about his delusion and Professor Duncan convinces them that they need to put Abed through a therapy session.

During the session, Abed reveals that the reason he’s escaping into fantasy is that his mother isn’t visiting him this season. But, his friends band together to get Duncan off his back and to support his desire for a stop-motion Christmas.

Christmas Songs

This episode is full of amazing songs. Abed kicks things off with a song about getting into the spirit of the day. He sings:

Give me the snow

Light up the trees

Deck every hall

And wall you can see

Roast every nut, mistle the toe

This needs to be the best Christmas since the original

Twenty thousand years from now they’ll say

The most successful Christmas was today

The best one is the end song where they all sing about what Christmas is for. It acknowledges the religious aspect of the holiday, with Shirley singing about how for a huge percentage of the nation it’s about the birth of Jesus, but also points out how big the holiday season has become for everyone, with Annie singing that “Christmas can even be a Hanukkah thing, that’s what Christmas is for.” The song is cheery and touching while also having realistic touches like Troy saying that Christmas is for “video games for three straight weeks.”

Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer

Abed mentions that every year when his mom visits, they watch Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer together. At the end, he watches the movie with his friends instead.

We’re counting down the days until Christmas by looking back at Christmas episodes from a variety of TV shows.
