The Simpsons Will Kill Off a Character Next Season

Hey hey! It’s a new season of the Simpsons!

The Simpsons have been in the cultural strata for over two decades. As relevant as the series have been during their run, fan interest has been waning as of late.

But to get fans excited for the upcoming season–their 26th– the Simpsons writers are looking to get fans excited, or at the very least concerned for the well being of the characters. At FOX’s summer panel at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, showrunner Al Jean announced that a beloved character will die in the season premiere.

The episode is called “Clown in the Dumps,” and will feature Krusty the Clown pondering retirement. Whether he is the character in question is still up for debate until the premiere, of course. A significantly less shocking–yet still heartbreaking death–would be of Krusty’s father, Rabbi Hyman Krustofsky.

As a lifelong Simpsons fan it would be hard to say goodbye to either one of the Krustofsky characters, who in the past created one of the most touching moments in the series with their reconciliation in season 3’s “Like Rabbi, Like Clown.”

Episodes like that have made the Simpsons go beyond being a typical cartoon to a deep conversation about relationships and family life.

“Clown in the Dumps” has the potential to be one of those episodes. And while not naming who was going to die in the season premiere , Jean stated, “It turned out bigger than we thought it was going to be.”

The Simpsons’ 26th season premiere will air on September 26th on FOX.
