If you enjoyed Ted with all of its raunchy humor, then prepare for its sequel to ‘knock your socks off’.
After MacFarlane’s dud One Millions Ways To Die In The West last year, he returns with his ingenious comic creation, a bear that talks and interacts with the world. Ted 2 is slated to have jokes that viewers will be quoting to their friends in the same fashion as the first Ted. Returning cast members for Ted 2 include Mark Wahlberg (Lone Survivor, Invincible), Sam J. Jones (Flash Gordon, Hollywood Safari), Jessica Barth (Get Smart, Next), Giovanni Ribisi (Saving Private Ryan, Boiler Room) and Patrick Warburton (Seinfeld, Larry Gaye: Renegade Male Flight Attendant); while new cast members include Morgan Freeman (Bruce Almighty, Last Vegas), Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia, Mean Girls) ,and John Slattery (Mad Men, Iron Man 2). Ted 2 also features cameos from Tom Brady, Liam Neeson, and Jay Leno.
In Ted 2, viewers see Ted marrying his beloved girlfriend Tami-Lynn (Jessica Barth). Ted’s marriage hits the rocks and realizes the way to his marriage is to have a child. Realizing he couldn’t conceive children, he seeks his best friend John (Mark Wahlberg) to search for the perfect sperm donor, later asking him to assist in stealing Tom Brady’s sperm while Brady is sleeping. When this option doesn’t work out, Ted asks John to go to the sperm bank and donate with disastrous results. Ted and Tammy decide on adoption, but Ted is declared “property” making him ineligible to adopt. Ted and John embark on a legal journey, employing the services of a lawyer named Samantha Leslie Jackson (Amanda Seyfried). Her name being a Pulp Fiction reference to the actor Samuel L. Jackson. In a sub-plot, viewers see the return of Donny, the crazed man who stole Ted and almost did him in, who pitches an idea to Hasbro of stealing Ted, carving him up, and finding out his secret; this would allow Hasbro to duplicate the process and allow many children the ability to have the kind of friendship John and Ted have.
The funniest scene in Ted 2 is when Ted accompanies John to the sperm bank. Ted gets bored and walks around the sperm bank. He runs into a doctor exiting the donor storage room and coerces the doctor into letting him enter the room. John later joins Ted in the storage room. Later while they are messing around, Ted causes a whole rack of sperm samples to fall on top of John. A nurse enters and informs them the sperm on the rack is being tested for sickle cell anemia, causing Ted to make a joke much to John’s chagrin.
Overall, Ted 2 is hilarious and will make you laugh out loud. Liam Neeson’s and Jay Leno’s cameos are funny and will cause the whole theater to erupt in laughter; however Leno’s cameo is a sort of blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo. There are some jokes that definitely push the envelope, but what would you expect from the creator of Family Guy where the jokes, at times, definitely push the envelope. Amanda Seyfried’s character is also hilarious as she is oblivious to Ted and John’s pop culture references, but they forgive her as she is also a pot smoker like them. If you decide to watch Ted 2, you will not be wasting your money as the film will keep you laughing. Ted 2 is out in theatres today and is rated R for crude and sexual content, pervasive language, and some drug use.
