Here at Pop Culture Spin we refuse to accept that Halloween is only one day. We’re going to be celebrating Halloween all month, by highlighting one of our favorite Halloween episodes every day. Today’s we’re looking at the Malcolm in the Middle episode “Halloween.”
Basic Info
Directed by: David D’Ovidio
Written by: Andy Bobrow
Episode Number: Season 7, Episode 4
Where to Watch It: Netflix
Why It’s Great
Hal learns that the house was the site of a grisly murder years ago. It turns out, Lois knew the whole time but kept it from him. He gets increasingly worried throughout the night, which means some fantastic nervous physical comedy.
Meanwhile, Lois nearly ruins her own evening by giving up her break to deal with a shoplifter. She gets frustrated feeling like she’s the only person who respects rules.
Why It’s Full of Halloween Spirit
Hal’s storyline shows how everyone can get sucked in by the spookiness and end up on edge. Early on, Malcolm responds with logic and reason, but as Hal keeps talking about the possibilities of their house being haunted, Malcolm gets freaked out.
Lois’s storyline shows a different take on the idea that Halloween is about rebellion. Her staunch insistence on respecting the rules when everyone else doesn’t care is great to watch.
We also get lots of Halloween mischief with Reese and Dewey. Reese teaches Dewey how to be as awful as possible. Dewey tells him, “Hey, you’re right. The candy you steal off other kids really does taste better.” Reese responds, “I’m telling you, it’s the fear.” They mess with an old man thinking he won’t be able to do anything about it, but quickly get their comeuppance.
