25 Days of Christmas Episodes: Amends (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

We’re counting down the days until Christmas by looking back at Christmas episodes from a variety of TV shows. Tonight we’re talking about “Amends” from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. What Christmas episode tropes did this episode use? Let’s take a look.

Basic Info

Directed by: Joss Whedon

Written by: Joss Whedon

Episode Number: Season 3, Episode 10

Where to Watch It: Netflix

White Christmas

Angel has returned from the dead and is haunted by the memories of all the horrible things he’s done. Meanwhile, throughout the episode, people mention how warm Christmas always is in southern California.

At the episode’s climax, Angel decides to kill himself by going outside and waiting for the sun to rise. But, Sunnydale experiences an extremely rare winter storm and the sun miraculously never comes up. Angel and Buffy walk together through the snow.

Meanwhile, the snowstorm is less of a miracle for Xander, who always sleeps outside on Christmas Eve to escape his family’s drunken fights.

Christmas Decorations

While Joyce decorates the tree, she asks, “So, angels on top again?” Considering everything that’s happening, Buffy is pretty jarred by this phrasing.

We also see Buffy and Joyce looking for trees together. Buffy notices one part of the tree farm where all the trees are dead. This helps her later when she locates the harbinger demons that have come to town because an old text says that they are death and nothing can grow above them.

When Buffy visits Faith in the hotel she’s staying in, there are Christmas lights strung around the room.

Christmas Songs

While Joyce and Buffy shop for Christmas trees together, we hear the music of “Joy to the World.”

Dark Christmas

A series of flashbacks show some horrible murders that Angel committed on Christmas day back when he didn’t have a soul.
