Johnny Depp is taking a nice break from playing quirky characters, as he’s flexing his acting chops once again to play Whitey Bulger, the most infamous, violent criminal in South Boston. It’s been a while since we’ve seen Depp chew on a role that’s worth his talent, and this one just might reignite his career.
Scott Cooper, director of Crazy Heart, sat in the hot seat for this project, and he’s a solid director for a gritty story. Depp will be surrounded by a talented cast onscreen, including Benedict Cumberbatch, Joel Edgerton, Kevin Bacon, and Dakota Johnson.
The film is based on the true story of Bulger, who wasn’t just a criminal, but also an FBI informant. It’s been stated that he became an FBI informant in order to take down a rival Mafia family trying to take over his turf. If that’s not badass, I don’t know what is. So far, judging from the trailer, Depp looks like a psychotic bulldog. Look for this to be Depp’s comeback film.
