So Terrence Malick has a new film coming out in 2015 called Knight of Cups, and the first trailer has been released. I have no idea what the synopsis is, and Malick probably doesn’t either, but the trailer looks intriguing and Christian Bale is taking the lead as a man named Rick. Let’s check out the summary on IMDb:
“Once there was a young prince whose father, the king of the East, sent him down into Egypt to find a pearl. But when the prince arrived, the people poured him a cup. Drinking it, he forgot he was the son of a king, forgot about the pearl and fell into a deep sleep.”
Yeah, that doesn’t help too much. That piece right there is supposed to be a story that Rick’s father used to tell him as a boy. I’m guessing Rick might have been confused by this story.
It has a very promising cast, including Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett, Imogen Poots, Ben Kingsley, Antonio Banderas, and Jason Clarke. It seems as though Bale is playing a burnt out actor trying to find his true self, roaming Hollywood with an empty soul. From the trailer, Rick is going for a dive into some modern version of Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. This may also be a film about Bruce Wayne’s life after The Dark Knight Rises. I can keep guessing here, but the bottom line is that the trailer is effective in making the film seem interesting without giving away much of anything.
The trailer itself almost plays out like a short film on its own. We’ll just have to wait and see what Malick has in store for us this time. At the very least we’ll get treated to some amazing visuals. Anyways, in a world ruled by social media, once in a while it’s nice to have a trailer where the story is under wraps.
