Why It’s Great
This Key & Peele Halloween special plays with different types of horror tropes. There’s a sketch about bros who are completely oblivious to their roommate being a poltergeist, a normal vampire who’s not into sexy goth vampire culture (“I got bit on purpose so I could live forever and see future cars”), tension between extras on a Walking Dead type of show, a Saw parody about relentlessly positive victims (“That’s a great saw. I’m a home improvement guy, I know my saws, and if you’re gonna saw off legs, that’s the one”) and a truly, wonderfully bizarre sketch that doesn’t reveal itself to be a horror movie parody until the final beat.
It also has great guest stars like Milana Vayntrub (Other Space), Marc Evan Jackson (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and David Giuntoli (Grimm).
Why It’s Full of Halloween Spirit
Key and Peele clearly love horror movies while also keeping it real. It’s great how the show looks at horror from every angle, always keeping it light. (“Frankenstein could just throw his dick at a bitch”).
Although everything is built around the horror genre, it doesn’t stick to straight parody and there’s something for everyone. If you don’t smile during the “continental breakfast” sketch, you might be dead inside.
Costume Count
My one grievance with this show is that they refuse to wear costumes in the segments in between sketches during the Halloween episodes. What are you afraid of, guys?
