31 Days of Halloween Episodes: The Creeps (Adventure Time)

Here at Pop Culture Spin we refuse to accept that Halloween is only one day. We’re going to be celebrating Halloween all month, by highlighting one of our favorite Halloween episodes every day. Today’s we’re looking at the Adventure Time episode “The Creeps.”

Basic Info

Directed by: Larry Leichliter

Written by: Ako Castuera and Jesse Moynihan

Episode Number: Season 3, Episode 12

Where to Watch It: Hulu

Why It’s Great

The episode is a surreal homage to Clue, with several characters finding themselves at a strange mansion where they’re given code names and fancy outfits. But, they’re surprised to receive a note saying that they’ll all be turned into ghosts and they start being picked off one by one.

Jake believes this is just a prank by Finn. In one of the best moments of the episode, BMO tells him, “When bad things happen, I know you want to believe they are a joke. But, life is sometimes scary and dark. That is why we must find the light.”

The episode has fun twists as we wonder who’s pranking who or if there’s a real ghost after all. There’s also plenty of my girl Lumpy Space Princess, who’s going through a hard time after her break up with Brad. It’s also full of silly gross-out humor like “Guy Farting” and Lumpy Space Princess’s lengthy trip to the bathroom that juxtapose nicely with the old-timey aesthetic and seriousness of the ghost story.

And Finn tearing up when Princess Bubblegum says she doesn’t remember what he wrote on her birthday card? Always adorable.

Why It’s Full of Halloween Spirit

“The Creeps” has a different, spookier feel than the rest of the series. The wonderful creepiness of the masquerade ball makes this a perfect Halloween episode.

Costume Count

They’re not exactly in costumes but everyone is dressed up for a masquerade.
