2015 San Diego Asian Film Festival Gala Awards

The 2015 San Diego Asian Film Festival Gala Awards was an inspiring, entertaining event that put a spotlight on the scene of independent cinema. The SDAFF Gala Awards is commonly referred to as the “Asian-American Golden Globes,” and it definitely lived up to that lofty reputation. A variety of guests gathered at San Diego’s Marriott Mission Valley for the celebration. The event brought together hundreds of actors, filmmakers, film lovers, and community leaders alike who all share an admiration for the art of projecting truth through celluloid.

The SDAFF is celebrating it’s sweet 16th year, and it did so with style on Saturday night. Many talented guests graced the red carpet, including Ken Jeong, star of the Hangover and ABC’s Dr. Ken, Randall Park, star of Fresh Off the Boat,  and Jamie Chung, star of Once Upon a Time.

Tyrus Wong, a designer who is most famously known for his work on the Disney classic, Bambi, and Rebel Without a Cause, was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award. The 104-year-old artist was praised for his ingenuity and ambition. The Digital Pioneer Award was presented to Eugene Yang, who is well-known for his Buzzfeed videos. Many other talented artists also earned awards from the largest exhibition of Asian cinema in the western United States.

Organized by the Pacific Arts Movement, the Gala Awards was yet another successful event for this year’s San Diego Asian Film Festival. It was a celebration of the unique voices and art of the Asian community; one that is under-appreciated in the world of mainstream cinema.

The SDAFF has more in store for those interested in catching some amazing independent films. Headquarters for the festival is the UltraStar Mission Valley at Hazard Center; however, there are different venues for various events. The closing film for the festival will take place at the historic La Paloma in Encinitas.

What’s refreshing is that film festivals like this one do not celebrate Starbucks Coffee shop type of movies. There’s more to the film world than what is seen on the mainstream circuit. This is a chance to delve into an unfiltered part of the cinematic universe and discover the work of many talented individuals.

The SDAFF will continue throughout this week until November 14. For more details and ticket information, please visit the SDAFF website.
