Before Key and Peele was the sketch show that shined the brightest on Comedy Central and Kevin Hart was one of the biggest names in stand-up, Dave Chappelle was the man. Correction, Chappelle is still the man; he just isn’t bathing in the spotlight as much as he used to. If comedy is about preference, Chappelle is a five-star buffet. He’s been quietly performing stand-up here and there, but a rumor has surfaced about him doing an HBO special.
Chappelle performed at the ACL live in Austin, and there were cameras afoot. The good folks at Comedy Hype have reported that HBO is planning to produce a new Dave Chappelle special. Nothing official has been announced, but I’m sure plenty of Chappelle Show fans are thoroughly excited about this rumor. What would this mean if it actually came to fruition? Comedy gold, and nothing less. He is a comedian to admire, and one of the best, if not the best, stand-up comedians of all time.
Who are the most popular stand-up comedians performing today? Kevin Hart, Aziz Ansari, and Louis C.K. Throw Chappelle into the mix with another special, and he may just shoot back to the top with a bullet. If you watched Justin Bieber’s Roast on Comedy Central, he was given a shout out, as he was enjoying the show as part of the audience. I bet plenty of people were hoping that he would go up on that stage to rock the mic right. Chappelle’s that funny. His fans know it, his fellow comedians know it, and those people’s moms know it. At Justin Bieber’s Comedy Central Roast, everyone knew who the funniest man in the building was.
Whether the HBO special is on or not, it’s safe to say that Chappelle is making moves again, as he’ll be touring in select cities. His laid back style and interesting angles on everyday life and politics is bold, and inventively hilarious. He talks about the truth, which is usually made up of problems, and makes it funny. At the same time he helps us cope with those problematic truths through comedic viewpoints without being preachy. Yeah, he’s still the man. Let’s just hope he’ll be the man with another HBO special.
