Running Backs

Top Picks – guys you HAVE to start if you have them

  1. Todd Gurley vs. Denver – There are a pair of receivers who are suspect for the Rams coming into this game.  That should mean a little more work for one of the best backs in the league.
  2. Melvin Gordon vs. Cleveland – The Chargers figure to feature Gordon as they try to hold back the Cleveland pass rush.  The secondary in Cleveland is actually better than expected, so that may also funnel more work to the running back.
  3. Christian McCaffrey vs. Washington – This is strictly based on volume.  McCafferey is getting way too much work to be ignored.

Players to watch – players to keep an eye on

  1. LeSean McCoy vs. Houston – There are rumors about a trade.  This really comes down to if the Bills want to try to make a run or if they want to get rid of him.
  2. All the Running Backs for Atlanta vs. Tampa Bay – With all the backs healthy, and all three sharing snaps you need to get a better handle on which one the team may lean on around the goal line and in general.

Players to avoid – I’d rather not start these guys if I can avoid it

  1. LeSean McCoy vs. Houston – Houston has a good defense, and even if the Bills are going to try to run through it I don’t think they can.
  2. Kenyan Drake vs. Chicago – Miami hasn’t done well running the ball, and Chicago has played the run well.  It doesn’t stack up well for Drake.

Draft King Bargains – decent matchups you can pick up on the cheap

  1. Jordan Howard vs. Miami ($6,500) – Miami hasn’t been good at stopping the run, and Howard is pretty cheap for a back getting 75% of the snaps.
  2. Miller/Blue vs. Buffalo ($4,700/$4,300) – Miller sat out last week, so if he’s out again Blue is SUPER cheap.  Either against Buffalo should be money.

Wide Receivers

Top Picks – guys you HAVE to start if you have them

  1. Antonio Brown vs. Cincinnati – Brown is just cruising along putting up gawdy numbers each week.
  2. Adam Thielen vs. Arizona – Minnesota has become super pass happy and Thielen seems to have a great thing going with Cousins.
  3. Mike Evans vs. Atlanta – Winston prefers to target bigger guys closer to the line of scrimmage (more on that later).  Evan figures to be the guy in a point bonanza.

Players to watch – players to keep an eye on

  1. DeSean Jackson vs. Atlanta – DeSean had some great games…with Fitzmagic. He’s used less by Winston.  Still, see how he does this week.
  2. Josh Gordon vs. Kansas City – Gordon and Brady have still yet to click on a significant level. I wouldn’t start him until you see they can put up points on the regular.

Players to avoid – I’d rather not start these guys if I can avoid it

  1. Allen Robinson vs. Miami – Yes, Trubiski had an insane week, but that was LAST week.  This week I expect him back to his normal self.
  2. Keelan Cole vs. Dallas – Dallas hasn’t been allowing receivers to score a lot, and the shaky play of Bortles has me getting rid of Wide Receivers in Jacksonville.

Draft King Bargains – decent matchups you can pick up on the cheap

  1. Josh Reynolds vs. Denver ($3,900) – With the top two options in LA potentially sitting on the sidelines Reynolds could be the WR2 for WR4 money.
  2. Robert Woods vs. Denver ($6,900) – Because of those injuries Woods figures to be the primary target this week.

Quarter Backs

Top Picks – guys you HAVE to start if you have them

  1. Patrick Mahomes vs. New England – He’s putting up insane numbers against good defenses.  He should shred the NE secondary.
  2. Tom Brady vs. Kansas City – In order to keep up with Mahomes, Brady is going to have to throw a lot.
  3. Matt Ryan vs. Tampa Bay – Tampa has been making it a habit of getting into shootouts, and Ryan should be able to have a field day with the receivers he has.

Players to watch – players to keep an eye on

  1. Jared Goff vs. Denver – With two receivers potentially out Goff may be asked to hand off a lot more.  I wouldn’t ditch him, but maybe not start him this week.
  2. Jameis Winston vs. Atlanta – The game figures to be high scoring, I just want to see more out of Winston before I throw him back in as a starter.

Players to avoid – I’d rather not start these guys if I can avoid it

  1. Derek Carr vs. Seattle – Carr has struggled a lot and Seattle still holds its own in terms of limiting passers
  2. Marcus Mariota vs. Baltimore – He’s so all over the map in terms of good and bad games. The Ravens D is still a good one and should be feared.

Draft King Bargains – decent matchups you can pick up on the cheap

  1. Jared Goff vs. Denver ($6,000) – He’s been under-priced because of the WR injuries.  Assuming there isn’t a falloff he’s a steal.
  2. Baker Mayfield vs. Los Angeles Chargers ($5,500) – Baker has been slinging it, and the Chargers secondary is bad enough where maybe he can have a career day if the ball bounces his way.
  3. Jameis Winston vs. Atlanta ($5,800) – Because he’s so fresh back to the scene he’s really under-priced.  He could be worth a gamble.

Tight Ends

Top Picks – guys you HAVE to start if you have them

  1. Rob Gronkowski vs. Kansas City – Is there a week where you don’t start Gronk?  Yes, the bye week, or those weeks when he (inevitably) gets injured.
  2. Travis Kelce vs. New England  – Kelce is just another weapon getting utilized a ton week in and out.
  3. Eric Ebron vs. New York Jets – As the result of an injury Ebron is the man, and should put up solid numbers against Jets team that is tough to run on or pass out side on.

Players to watch – players to keep an eye on

  1. Austin Hooper vs. Tampa Bay – He’s the only Tight End in Atlanta, and in a high scoring game it will be interesting to see how he gets used.
  2. Geoff Swaim vs. Jacksonville – Swaim seems to be the starting TE, but I hate how other guys keep getting cycled in around the goal line.

Players to avoid – I’d rather not start these guys if I can avoid it

  1. Antonio Gates vs. Cleveland – He’s failed to produce every single week.  I think he was right to retire.
  2. Geoff Swaim vs. Jacksonville – Even as the man in Dallas this is a bad weekly match-up for him

Draft King Bargains – decent matchups you can pick up on the cheap

  1. David Njoku vs. Los Angeles Chargers ($3,800) – He’s doing much better with Baker and he’s under-priced for some strange reason.
  2. Vance McDonald vs. Cincinnati ($3,400) – McDonald gets the bulk of the work, and the Bengals aren’t great at covering TE’s.

Defenses

Top Picks – teams you HAVE to start if you have them

  1. Minnesota vs. Arizona – The Cards are bad, the Vikings are good.  Enough said.
  2. Houston vs. Buffalo – Buffalo has been a turnover machine, and the Texas have been gobbling them up.
  3. Packers vs. San Francisco – This is a bit of a flyer, but the 49ers have been so bad it’s not a bad idea to play any defense that gets them on a week to week basis.

Teams to watch – teams to keep an eye on

  1. Panthers vs. Washington – The Panthers have been hot and cold. If they show some teeth against the Redskins I might like them as a replacement D
  2. New York Jets vs. Indianapolis – Indy hasn’t been great, and the Jets have a killer front 4.  I like a lot of sacks in this game.

Teams to avoid – I’d rather not start these guys if I can avoid it

  1. New England vs. Kansas City – The Chiefs put up a ton on the Jags.  New England is not the Jags.
  2. Denver vs. Los Angeles Rams – Anyone playing the Rams isn’t a smart play.

Draft King Bargains – decent matchups you can pick up on the cheap

  1. Baltimore vs. Tennessee ($2,800) – This is more about how cheap they are and how shaky Mariota can be.
  2. New York Jets vs. Indianapolis ($2,900) – Just too cheap with too much potential for mega points.
