iZombie Review: 1.10: Mr. Berserk

This week’s iZombie set things up for the final two episodes of the season by bringing everyone together. Major has been pursuing Blaine mostly independently for most of the season, but now it’s time to bring him into the fold. Liv is still reluctant to tell him everything and wants to protect him. Ravi isn’t so sure, but understands Liv’s concerns. Clive, as one of the characters who still doesn’t know about zombies, is just looking out for Major’s mental state.

Major is so freaked out after being sure that he shot Blaine that, with Clive’s encouragement, he’s decided to check into a mental institution. This prompts Ravi to tell Liv that they definitely need to tell him what’s going on, but she points out that if Major is this freaked out now, how will he react to knowing that Blaine is actually a brain-eating zombie?

It also set up what will most likely be season two’s villain: the Max Rager corporation, whose product is causing violent outbursts. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. At this point, it’s possible to imagine Liv and company taking out Blaine with vigilante justice in the last couple of episodes of the season, but an evil corporation will be a different fight entirely.

This episode also saw Liv eating the brains of an alcoholic, a choice she actively made because her distress over losing Lowell already had her in the mental state to drown her sorrows. It was a sad, hard to watch episode for Liv. Your heart goes out to her. At the same time, they managed to get some dark humor out of Liv letting herself slide into this life.

The final scene of Liv looking over Lowell’s body and confessing to Ravi that she feels it’s her fault that he’s dead was a heartbreaking scene and one of the best scenes in the series so far.
