Warner Bros debuted a trailer reel for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad for Comic Con. Usually, studios will debut special trailers of films only for those who attended Comic Con. A few hours later, bootleg copies of the trailer started to pop up on the Internet. This bootleg trailer upset Warner Bros’ Worldwide Marketing president Sue Kroll who had previously stated Warner Bros had no intentions of releasing a better version of the trailer.
The bootleg trailer, however, garnered great praise. Ultimately, Warner Bros changed their minds and decided to release the trailer shown at Comic Con. Sue Kroll released the following statement: “Warner Bros. Pictures and our anti-piracy team have worked tirelessly over the last 48 hours to contain the Suicide Squad footage that was pirated from Hall H on Saturday. We have been unable to achieve that goal. Today we will release the same footage that has been illegally circulating on the web, in the form it was created and high quality with which it was intended to be enjoyed. We regret this decision as it was our intention to keep the footage as a unique experience for the Comic Con crowd, but we cannot continue to allow the film to be represented by the poor quality of the pirated footage stolen from our presentation.”
In Suicide Squad, Amanda Waller (portrayed by Viola Davis) assembles a taskforce of the world’s deadliest villains for a mission that will do some good for humanity. The ensemble cast features Will Smith (Focus, Men In Black), Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club, Lord Of War), Margot Robbie (Focus, Wolf of Wall Street), Joel Kinnaman (Robocop, Run All Night), Jai Courtney (Jack Reacher, Divergent), Cara Delevingne (Paper Towns, Pan), and Viola Davis (The Help, Traffic). Suicide Squad takes place within the same universe as Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The film will be released on August 5, 2016.
